Description

This large and impressive "Abundance" sculpture of two leaping carp was hand carved from a fantastic piece of burl wood, a very rare and expensive type of wood.
The carver expertly incorporated the features of the burl into the pattern of the fishes' skin, and used the fine grain in other ways, too. The fish are very lifelike and the scale is perfect. This is not a mass produced item but an exquisite piece of original art.
Powerful symbols in Chinese culture, fish are thought to enhance wealth, abundance and marital bliss. In feng shui, fish are representations of harmony and success in all aspects of life. Fish are thought to aid in the accumulation of wealth and are often the subject for carvings and sculpture.
This piece measures 16" wide and 13 1/2" high, and is about 9" front to back. It's large, but it's not too big to display in most settings, even in the home. It may be signed--underneath on a sticker is handwritten "Wish you abundance" in English and there are some Chinese characters that I can't read. Condition is excellent except for an expert repair on one fish's tail, and maybe a small chip (I can't tell if it's a chip or the shape of the tail). There is some overall aging and mellowing of the surface (see pics).  Shipped USPS, UPS, or local pickup outside Washington DC.
