Description
Description:I originally bought this wonderful piece in Maryland at auction.
It is huge and made a striking piece in my library. However, since moving to Florida, I have not been able to find the right place for such a big piece.
This piece is extremely large...measuring 18” high, 12” wide and about 12.5” deep.
The sculpture is extremely heavy, 24.8 pounds.
The material of the sculpture is red clay, and it is painted in four colors: yellow, green, blue and white. A number of areas have a wash over the red clay...his face, throne, bear, etc.
The man is clearly a warrior and probably represents Genghis Khan.
The figure sits on a throne which has bats on the side (5 on one side...quite auspicious) and sits on an animal that looks like a bear.
The warrior wears a dragon motif on his vest or shirt.
There is a maker's mark in Chinese on the back. I don't read Chinese characters, but the symbols seem to match a mark I have seen as Tongzhi which would date it to 1862-1874.
As regular small mudmen figures are frequently 100 years old, this date seems plausible....however, I cannot guarantee anything and suggest deeper research on your own if the dating is particularly important to you.
Condition
:
There is an area on the left knee that was damaged already when I bought the piece....there is a small chip on his pants, and a piece of the bow is chipped off.
There is a mark on the back (see close up photo) underneath an extended area that has a hole in it. The area below looks like a similar extension as chipped off. It feels like some residual glue may still be on it.
I don't see any other damage after inspecting hands, eyebrows, beard toes (which are particularly vunerable).
Please be sure to see all the photos as it is part of the overall description.
I apologize ahead of time for the cost of shipping. I only ship insured. For this particular piece, I'll either need to ask my husband to make a custom crate or have UPS figure out a way to pack it safely. Shipping could take a couple days longer than my 1-day turnaround. I may also want to explore shipping USPS Priority as I think they are pretty careful with Priority packages. No matter UPS or USPS, the package will be fully insured.
